MD (General Medicine) covers the medical conditions that affect adults across the whole body — rather than one organ system. In practice that means the twenty areas below, seen at Uttarbanga Clinic six days a week.
Dr Soumya Ghosh is a consultant physician with an MD in General Medicine, practising at Uttarbanga Clinic on Sunity Road, Cooch Behar. Blood pressure that stays high despite two or three medicines, resistant hypertension workup, adjusting treatment to reduce side effects, and screening younger patients for secondary causes. Underactive thyroid presenting as weight gain, tiredness, hair loss and cold intolerance; overactive thyroid with weight loss, tremor and palpitations; Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Where there is a nodule, a thyroid ultrasound is arranged and its report used to decide who needs FNAC and who needs monitoring. Thyroid in pregnancy. Thyroid guide.
Kidney function monitoring with creatinine, eGFR and urine albumin, and early detection of diabetic kidney disease. Recurrent urinary infection, kidney stones and electrolyte disturbance. Renal ultrasound arranged where hydronephrosis or kidney size needs checking. CKD staging and nephrology referral.
Prolonged fever of unknown origin, recurrent fever, malaria, dengue with platelet monitoring, typhoid, scrub typhus, tuberculosis both pulmonary and extra-pulmonary, and HIV screening. Chest imaging and abdominal ultrasound arranged where fever passes a week, following ICMR staged testing.
Iron deficiency anaemia investigated for its underlying cause rather than treated with iron alone. B12 and folate deficiency, anaemia of chronic disease, thalassaemia trait counselling, unexplained high or low blood counts, and easy bruising or bleeding.

Obesity & weight management
The weight programme at Uttarbanga Clinic, Cooch Behar combines body composition analysis, monthly blood monitoring, dietary guidance built around Bengali food, and — for patients who meet the clinical criteria — GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy with semaglutide. Generic semaglutide became available in India on 20 March 2026 from about ₹1,290 per month, which brought the medicine within reach for many patients here for the first time. Treatment is prescribed only after assessment, and not everyone is a candidate.
Measures body fat percentage, muscle mass, visceral fat level and metabolic age, so progress is tracked as fat lost rather than weight lost. Repeated monthly.
Semaglutide, titrated from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg under supervision. In the STEP 1 randomised trial, participants on 2.4 mg weekly lost a mean of 14.9% of body weight at 68 weeks, against 2.4% on placebo.[1]
HbA1c, lipids, liver function and kidney function checked through the programme — the aim is metabolic health, not the number on the scale alone.
Practical guidance on reducing rice portions, prioritising protein and limiting cooking oil, worked out against what is actually cooked at home.
Who this is for. GLP-1 therapy is generally considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above where there is an associated condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or obstructive sleep apnoea. Suitability, side effects and cost are discussed at the consultation before anything is prescribed. Weight regain is common if treatment stops, and this is discussed openly at the outset.

ECG, body composition analysis and pathology sample collection are at the same address, so for those the measurement and the decision happen in one visit. Imaging is not: ultrasound, CT and echocardiography are arranged elsewhere and the report is reviewed with you at follow-up. Point-of-care ultrasound is not available at Uttarbanga Clinic at present. It is planned, and this page will say so plainly when it changes.
Recorded and interpreted during the consultation, which is what makes a same-visit answer possible for chest pain and palpitations.
A one-hour high-sensitivity troponin T is available at the local Apollo laboratory, which is what actually settles whether chest pain is cardiac.
Fat mass, muscle mass and visceral fat measured on the same machine each visit, so the weight-management programme is tracked against something more useful than weight alone.
Blood and urine samples collected at the same address, so a test ordered at the consultation does not need a second journey.
Ultrasound, X-ray, CT and echocardiography are referred. You are told what each will cost and why it is needed before it is arranged.

Every previous prescription, all old reports and scans however old, the actual strips or boxes of the medicines you are taking now, and your blood pressure or sugar diary if you keep one. Old reports matter more than most people expect — they show how a condition has behaved over time.
Register at the reception desk on arrival. Both walk-in and appointment patients are seen. Waiting is longer in the evening; mid-morning and early afternoon are usually quieter.
History first, then examination. An ECG is recorded in the room where it is needed. Where imaging or a blood test is what settles the question, it is ordered with the reason written down, and the follow-up date is set so the result is actually reviewed rather than left with you to interpret.
A printed prescription, any tests that are needed with a clear reason for each, and a specific follow-up date. If a referral to another specialist or a hospital is the right step, that is said plainly.
Long-term conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure and thyroid disease need review rather than a single visit. Bring the same folder each time so the record stays in one place.

An MD in General Medicine is a three-year postgraduate degree in adult internal medicine taken after MBBS. What it changes in practice is the order of work: history and examination first, then investigation chosen to answer a specific question, then treatment, then a review date. Where a diagnosis is not obvious, the training is in working through a differential systematically rather than treating the loudest symptom.
Dr Ghosh completed his MD at the Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) in Kolkata and is registered with the West Bengal Medical Council under number 67751, which can be verified on the Indian Medical Register. Alongside private practice at Uttarbanga Clinic he is Assistant Professor in the Department of General Medicine at MJN Medical College & Hospital, Cooch Behar, where he teaches postgraduate and undergraduate students (NMC Teacher ID MED-2264307).

Questions patients ask
Check three things you can verify yourself. First, the qualification — an MD or DNB in General Medicine is a postgraduate degree in adult internal medicine, and it should be stated in full rather than abbreviated vaguely. Second, the registration number, which you can look up on the Indian Medical Register to confirm the doctor is currently registered. Third, whether you leave the consultation understanding what your diagnosis is, why each test was ordered, and when you are being seen again.

Both work. Uttarbanga Clinic accepts walk-in patients Monday to Saturday between 10:00 and 20:00. Booking on WhatsApp at +91 99323 33750 usually means a shorter wait, particularly in the evening, which is the busiest part of the day.
The consultation fee at Uttarbanga Clinic is ₹500, payable at reception. Follow-up within 10 days of the visit is not charged; after 10 days the ₹500 fee applies again. That is deliberate — it means coming back with your test results, or because something has not settled, does not cost you a second consultation, and nobody has to weigh up the fee against being seen. Blood tests and medicines are charged separately, and you are told what each will cost before it is done rather than afterwards. Cash and UPI are both accepted.
Bring every old prescription and report you have, however old, and the actual strips or boxes of the medicines you are currently taking. If you monitor your own blood pressure or blood sugar, bring the diary. Previous reports are often more useful than a fresh test, because they show how the condition has changed over time.

For non-emergency cardiac problems, Dr Ghosh, as a physician with an MD in General Medicine, assesses chest pain, manages heart failure and blood pressure, interprets ECGs, scores cardiac risk, manages cholesterol, and provides follow-up after a heart attack. Where a patient needs an echocardiogram, angiography or a cardiologist's opinion, that referral is arranged. He does not hold a DM in Cardiology and does not practise as a cardiologist.
General medicine covers adult illness across the whole body rather than one organ. It is the appropriate first specialist for diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, gastric and liver disease, anaemia, fever and infection, breathlessness, joint pain, kidney function problems, and any situation where several symptoms may share one underlying cause. It is also the right place to start when a diagnosis has not been made, because the training is in differential diagnosis. Children under 12 should see a paediatrician; pregnancy care needs an obstetrician; surgical problems need a surgeon.
Generic semaglutide became available in India on 20 March 2026, with prices starting at roughly ₹1,290 per month, and it can be prescribed at Uttarbanga Clinic where a patient meets the clinical criteria. It is prescribed only after assessment — it is not suitable for everyone, it has side effects, chiefly nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms during dose escalation, and weight is commonly regained if it is stopped. Where a scan is needed — for fatty liver, gallstones, kidney size, a thyroid nodule or a suspected clot in the leg — it is arranged at an imaging centre in Cooch Behar and the report is reviewed with you at follow-up, which is not charged if you return within 10 days.
