What is happening to me?
Most people arrive with a complaint rather than a diagnosis. These ten guides start from the symptom and work towards the answer, using what these things actually turn out to be in Cooch Behar and the surrounding districts — not a general list. Every figure is sourced and every page carries a review date.

- A first fit, or a headache that reached its worst within a minute
- Vomiting blood, or black tarry stools
- A suspected venomous snakebite
Call 108 or go directly to the emergency department at MJN Medical College & Hospital, Cooch Behar. Do not drive yourself.
These pages are written to help you understand what is going on and what to ask. They are not a diagnosis, and nothing here replaces being examined.

Fever
Why most people here arrive on day three or four, and what scrub typhus, dengue and typhoid actually look like in this district.
Read the guide →Chest pain or tightness
Why relief from an antacid proves nothing, why a normal ECG proves less than people think, and what a one-hour troponin settles.
Read the guide →Breathlessness
Anaemia first, then bronchospasm — and why a clear chest at the consultation is not a negative result, because the spasm is not there when you are being examined.
Read the guide →Persistent weakness
The order it is worked through, and why vertigo and breathlessness are so often reported as weakness.
Read the guide →A cough that will not go দীর্ঘদিনের কাশি
Two weeks is the threshold for TB testing — but which sputum test was done matters more, and blood pressure tablets cause cough too.
Read the guide →“Gas”, acidity and abdominal pain
Mostly not an acid problem: urinary causes accounted for 29% of abdominal pain in an Indian series against 8% for acid disease. Stones, infection, parasites, IBS and pain from the abdominal wall.
Read the guide →Swelling of the legs
One leg or both splits the diagnosis in half — and the blood pressure tablet that causes it in one user in ten.
Read the guide →Headache
Why raised blood pressure is almost never the cause, and why painkillers themselves are a leading reason for daily headache.
Read the guide →Joint and body pain
Why a raised uric acid and a low vitamin D rarely explain it, and what post-chikungunya joint pain looks like.
Read the guide →Losing weight without trying
Why tuberculosis is excluded first in this district, and why it need not come with a cough.
Read the guide →How these pages are written
Each one is built around the same question: given someone with this complaint, walking into this clinic, in this district — what is it most likely to be, and what would change that judgement? That is a different question from what a textbook answers, because pretest probability is local. Anaemia is the commonest cause of exertional breathlessness here in a way it is not in London. Tuberculosis is the first thing excluded in unexplained weight loss here in a way it is not in Toronto. Where a West Bengal or eastern India figure exists, it is used and cited. Where only an all-India figure exists, it is labelled as such. Where a figure could not be verified against a primary source, it was left out rather than softened — and in a few places the page says plainly that the data does not exist.
Every page carries the emergency signs at the top rather than the bottom, a contents list, a summary in Bengali, numbered references, and the date it was last reviewed. None of them is a substitute for being examined, and several of them exist mainly to explain why.
